Jessica Fellinger's Goals
To pass the RD credentialing exam in 2022 and begin work within the next two years as an eating disorder dietitian.

“What is a dietitian?” I have been asked this question countless times in the past. The ER is fast-paced, full of life and death, and patients going home or upstairs. It is not in the business of prevention, but crisis management. Still, I was a bit taken aback the first time one of the doctors asked me what a dietitian was. I just figured dietitians worked with everyone in the hospital and all doctors would know who the dietitians were. In my time working in our hospital’s ER, I was able to educate our doctors and coworkers a bit on the profession of dietetics. I shared my enthusiasm for food and nutrition. Now I hope to share it with my community and the world in general. I want to bring my passion and determination to give a positive influence during my career and life in general. I have been involved in a variety of work and volunteer groups in recent years, including working full time as a medical scribe, performing research during undergraduate study, and being Franciscan University’s equestrian team captain. These experiences have made me stronger and taught me lessons of perseverance, the value of hard work, and the importance of paying attention to detail. Working as an ER medical scribe has given me experience with medical charts, medical team workflow, and balancing speed of performance with attention to detail and accuracy. I have also trained new scribes, providing me the opportunity to lead and teach others. Medical scribing has shown me the importance of remaining calm and maintaining a calm appearance in stressful situations along with the importance of genuine patient care with the realistic perspective that not all patients are willing to change or follow the advice of the medical team. Outside of medical scribing, I have improved my leadership skills through organizing fundraisers and details for shows, and working with teammates and trainers as team captain for the Franciscan University equestrian team. As captain, I was able to promote the team and recruit new teammates, and direct the team through a training change. I obtained new leadership skills through discussing show matters with the IHSA regional director and trainers and working with a variety of teammate personalities. I attended events such as team open house and fundraisers, and negotiated a team budget on multiple occasions with the school’s student government. While at Franciscan University, I also improved my presentation as well as biology research skills through participating in the Franciscan Institute for Science and Health summer program and undergraduate research throughout my four years as an undergraduate student. This showed me the importance of research for the medical and scientific communities. This has allowed me to appreciate the importance of clinical dietetic research at a deeper level, as it is the foundation for this field. Some of my short-term goals within the next few years include sitting the RDN exam, starting my first job as a clinical dietitian, and completing my master’s degree through the University of Alabama. I desire to gain experience in a variety of clinical dietetic areas throughout the internship as there are many specialties that interest me, including diabetes, and eating disorder dietetics. One of my strengths is compassion for other people. I specifically chose a career in dietetics to meet and work with people to improve their health and quality of life. I am very aware of the negative impact of diet culture on people’s mentality and attitude towards nutrition and health. Understanding that mentality, I will approach patients with respect and caring. I have persevered through many years of school, several degrees, and countless projects, presentations, exams, and community work; this attitude of working hard and persevering will help me on difficult days to persist and become an excellent dietitian.
